Bidders invited to construct Gdansk airport rail link

POLAND: The local authority controlled company Pomorska Kolej Metropolitalna is planning to construct a new railway line linking Gdansk-Wrzeszcz with the airport as well as with Gdynia and Koscierzyna.

A tender has just been called to choose a contractor to design and build the first stage of the project.

Within the framework of the undertaking, the company plans to build a 20 km section of the line that will include eight passenger stops. It will run from Gdansk-Wrzeszcz up to Lech Walesa Airport, and will then connect with the already existing Gdynia-Koscierzyna line. Thanks to the project, trains from Gdansk and Gdynia to the airport will take just under 25 minutes.

The cost of the project is estimated at approximately PLN 760m (€180.5m) net, and more than PLN 500m (€118.7m) of this sum will come from an EU subsidy.

Companies have until July 30 to express their interest, and PKM will invite up to 20 bidders to submit offers in the second phase of tendering.

Price will be the main criterion for choosing the winner in the second part of the tender. An agreement will be concluded with the contractor in November 2012 and the deadline for completing the project is 30 April 2015.
