the Minister takes a tour of the depotThe ERL extension will serve the growing number of low cost carrier passengers from all stations including KL Sentral and Bandar Tasik Selatan as well as passengers connecting between full service and low cost airlines.

On 19th January the Minister of Transport has visited the project site near the Bunga Raya VVIP Complex to check on the works progress.

The objective of the project is to extend the existing ERL line at the Main Terminal Building of KLIA1 to the new Integrated Complex at KLIA2. The line is 2.14 km in length.

From the reversing track, it will cut across to the new ERL station within the Integrated Complex near the end of Runway 2. The Integrated Complex, which is adjoined to the Main Terminal Building of KLIA2, will accommodate all public transportation serving KLIA including ERL’s KLIA Ekspres and KLIA Transit.

The project started in July 2011 and is scheduled to be completed by October 2012 although the commercial services will begin only in April 2013 when KLIA 2 opens.

KLIA2 will be served by both the KLIA Ekspres and KLIA Transit services. There are essentially two transfer types: airport transfer between KLIA2 and other ERL stations; and inter-terminal transfer between KLIA2 and the current KLIA1. During the peak hours, there will be a total of 6 services operating between the two terminals from a common platform in KLIA1 as well as in KLIA2, with the journey time of only 3 minutes.

The fares from other stations to KLIA2 will be the same as to KLIA1 while the inter-terminal fare will be RM 2 per trip.

All payment collection options that are currently available at ERL stations, now including Touch ‘n Go system and bar code boarding, will be available at the new KLIA2 Station.

During his visit the Minister boarded the KLIA Transit train from Putrajaya & Cyberjaya Station and made his first stop at ERL’s Kompleks Rel-Udara in Salak Tinggi. The Minister was given a briefing and taken on a tour of the depot by ERL’s Chief Executive Officer, Noormah Mohd Noor and ERL Maintenance Support Sdn Bhd (E-MAS)’s Chief Executive Officer, Thomas Baake.

E-MAS is currently undertaking a train interior refurbishment exercise involving replacing carpets in KLIA Ekspres trains and seat covers in both KLIA Ekspres and KLIA Transit trains. The work, together with the onboard wifi upgrading, is expected to be completed by April 2012.
