The Airport Express will run every 15 minutes from Berlin Hauptbahnhof to BER with a journey time of only 30 minutes, S-Bahn trains and buses will run at frequent intervals and BER is also connected to the intercity rail network.

“It isn’t just important to have a modern airport - it is equally important that the new airport is easy to get to. And the connections to Willy Brand Airport are truly something to be proud of” said Klaus Wowereit, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the airport operating company. “Passengers have a choice: by car on the new south-bound motorway and by rail with the Airport Express, which will run every 15 minutes. There will be direct services from the stations Spandau, Charlottenburg, Zoologischer Garten, Friedrichstraße, Alexanderplatz, Ostbahnhof, Karlshorst, Potsdamer Platz and Südkreuz. People travelling to BER will be able to use stations throughout the city, including regular S-Bahn and bus services, ensuring that the connections network for the new airport truly does justice to Berlin’s polycentric layout. We all hope that journey times between the city centre and the new airport will in a few years become even shorter via the former Dresden-bound line.”

“By the time BER opens, we will be able to offer passengers, visitors and the people who work here an exceptionally efficient network of bus and train services”, said Hans-Werner Franz, Managing Director of Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg (VBB).

“Berlin Brandenburg Airport will not only be highly accessible from the air, it will also have excellent rail and road connections”, said Prof. Dr. Rainer Schwarz, Chief Executive Officer of Berlin Airports. “Our aim during the planning phase for BER was to get every second passenger to travel to the airport on public transport. The new rail and bus services provide precisely the infrastructure needed to achieve this target.”

Airport Express and S-Bahn

Posters will be hung up at numerous S-Bahn train stations in Berlin showing how long the journey time from that particular station is to BER: “26 minutes” says the poster at Alexanderplatz, “39 minutes” from Zoologischer Garten, “22 minutes” from Ostbahnhof. The Airport Express connects Berlin Brandenburg Airport with the Berlin city railway (RE7, RB14) every 30 minutes and with the Südkreuz-Hauptbahnhof (RE9) line every 30 minutes, thus providing services between BER and Hauptbahnhof every 15 minutes. Additionally, the S-Bahn trains run every 10 minutes (S9 and S45).

Regional services to Brandenburg

The RB22 services goes from Potsdam to Golm and on to BER; journey time from Potsdam Hauptbahnhof to BER is 42 minutes. Further direct services to Brandenburg are the Airport Express, the Berlin city railway and Potsdam Babelsberg to Dessau (RE7) and through Königs Wusterhausen to Senftenberg (RB14).

Bus connections

Public transport connections at the new airport will include numerous bus services: the express buses X7 and X11 connect BER and Rudow every five minutes; passengers can change here for the underground line U7. The X11 bus continues to Lichterfelde-West and on to Dahlem. Other bus lines also stop off at a number of stations, providing speedy and easy connections with Berlin’s public transport network and destinations in Brandenburg.

Intercity services

As well as regional rail and bus services, Berlin Brandenburg Airport is also well connected to the intercity rail network: there will be direct services from BER to Hamburg, Münster and Hanover, as well as Amsterdam Schiphol Airport and Cracow.

Christian Spaak, Commercial Director of Berlin Airport will be speaking at The Future of AirRail – Airport Rail Terminal Integration conference on 20th October this year. Register here to attend.
