Air India, Jet Airways and Kingfisher Airlines are offering the check-in services at New Delhi Station and Shivaji Stadium Station of the DMAE line.

Passengers can check-in their bags minimum 2 hours and maximum 6 hours prior to their flight time, allowing them more time to go around the city.

The 23-km Airport Metro, which connects Connaught Place with the IGI Airport in 18 minutes, was opened to public on 23 February 2011.

DMAE is the fourth airport express in the world to offer in-town check-in for its passengers. MTR Airport Express (Hong Kong), KLIA Ekspres (Kuala Lumpur) and City Airport Train (Vienna) are the other three services where passengers can drop of their luggage at city stations.

Heathrow Express (London) and Aeroexpress (Moscow) tried to implement this service but it didn’t win their passengers’ hearts, while MTR Airport Express says the service proved to be so successful that 92% of airlines flying to Hong Kong International Airport signed in for the programme. According to MTR, 54.3% of passengers are using the in-town check-in services on the Hong Kong Airport Express Line.

So what makes this service so successful in some countries and slow to take off in other?

Some may argue that this is a cultural issue and that travellers in east countries love to take two or more bags with them. But are westerners naturally light-weight travellers or is this a result of low cost airlines encouraging their passengers to check-in online and charging extra’s for hold luggage?
