Transport Minister Terry Mulder. Picture: Paul Trezise Herald Sun “The budget reflects a key commitment to invest in a rail link to Avalon Airport. Avalon is Victoria’s next international airport and this Budget ensures that the necessary planning and design work can commence immediately for a new rail line to the airport terminal.” Public Transport Minister Terry Mulder said.

“This project will ultimately provide a new station at Avalon Airport and a new rail link between the airport and Lara, providing passengers with direct rail access to Geelong and Melbourne.”
According to the Minister, a newly established Public Transport Development Authority (PTDA) will play a key role in overseeing planning for new rail lines to Avalon and Melbourne airports.

“We are committed to start building a rail link to Avalon Airport within our first term and we will identify the best route for a new rail link to Melbourne Airport at Tullamarine and investigate the preferred option of a centrally-located terminal at Melbourne Airport”.

Mulder said that the government has allocated $3 million to begin investigations for the Avalon rail link, which includes a new railway station at the airport and rail connections to both Geelong and Southern Cross and $6.5 million for a two-year feasibility study into a Melbourne Airport Rail Link.
