lyon-airport-t3A 5,000 m² boarding satellite will incorporate a departure floor level with the runway, a semi-underground "arrival" floor and 2 departure lounges that can be partitioned to make 10 and 500 m² of shops. This satellite will be connected to the current Terminal 3 by an underground gallery that will run under the aircraft taxiing zone.

The current 4,000 m² building will be redesigned for check-in (12 check-in desks), security checkpoints (6 filtering inspection posts) and arrivals (2 luggage carousels).

This infrastructure will be ready for use at the start of 2012.

By 2016, Terminal 3 will be directly connected to Terminal 1 creating a new 15,000m² public area including 4,000m² of shops and services.

The current simplified-service Terminal 3 dedicated to low-cost flights opened its doors in April 2008 to incorporate the easyJet base. Terminal 3 currently welcomes 1,470,000 passengers carried by the easyJet,Transavia and Air Arabia airlines. Low cost traffic was up in 2010 by 10% compared with 2009 (+21.9% in December) and now represents 19% of total traffic compared with only 3% in 2007. This figure is expected to rise to more than 30% within the next 5 years.

The construction of the new Terminal 3 building meets the objective to increase the overall capacity of the airport’s infrastructures and to maximise development of the LGV (high-speed line) in the East.

This initial phase will increase airport’s overall capacity from 9.5 million to 11 million passengers. On completion of the next phase to be started in 2016, this figure will reach 12.5 million.

The airport is already linked to the high-speed train (TGV) network. The TGV has been serving the airport since July 1994. 20 high speed trains connect the airport daily with 15 towns from the Rhône-Alpes, Provence, Paris Gare de Lyon and Italy (Turin, Milan and Oulx).

Last year the airport received another rail link - the RhonExpress tram connects Lyon town centre (Gare de la Part-Dieu) with the airport in less than 30 minutes with a tram every 15 minutes.
