The group consists of about 15 South Korean firms including the state-run railway operator Korail, Korea Rail Network Authority, Hyundai Rotem and Hyundai Heavy Industries. Their Brazilian partners include investment firm UTC and builder EGESA.

Brazil’s Ministry of Transport will accept project proposals until 29 November and name the preferred bidder on 16 December. The final contractor will be chosen on 8 February 2011 with an official signing of the contract planned for 11 May 2011.
“We have been preparing a lot over the past five years to participate in constructing the bullet train network in Brazil. I firmly believe that the Korean consortium will win the bid,” said Seo Seon-duk, who leads a joint bidding committee.
Brazil plans to build a 510 kilometer-high speed railway to connect Rio with Sao Paulo and Campinas, which will include stops at international airports.
The winning bidder will be the one offering the lowest fares as the government set a fare tariff ceiling of maximum BRL 0.49 (USD 0.28) per mile. The estimate cost of the construction is BRL 33.1 (USD 18.7) billion.
The successful bidder will win the right to build the railway and to operate it for 40 years.
The schedule calls for the railway to be completed by 2017, although the government had previously aimed to open the line before the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. The government now anticipates the line will be partially open before the games.
Korea has been seeking to export its homegrown bullet train KTX-II to Brazil, Turkey, Florida and California.
