Called the Interlink, the new complex consists of a commuter rail station, rental-car hub and commuter parking garage — all connected to the airport terminal by a glassed-in skywalk.

The train station will be served by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, with trains slated to begin their runs by Christmas “if not sooner,” according to Michael Lewis, director of the Rhode Island Department of Transportation, which has worked out an agreement with the commuter rail.

The $267-million project, which was first talked about nearly 20 years ago, was a combined investment of the Rhode Island Airport Corporation, the state DOT and the Federal Highway Administration.
