First dedicated private airport tram service, RhônExpress, opens

Tuesday, 10 Aug 2010 09:00
RhônExpress is the first dedicated airport tram service, constructed by private concessionaire under the public private partnership, and to become profitable, the concession will have to achieve significant market penetration and win a market share that goes well beyond that of most other tram services to airports.

There are many examples of light rail airport links, but these are usually straightforward extensions or part of an existing light rail network.

These lines not always meet the needs of typical leisure travellers with bags or, crucially, the business traveller who needs fast service, and typically achieve a single figure market share.

The 22 km RhônExpress connects Lyon with its airport in 30 minutes and will run between the city and the airport every 15 minutes from 06:00 until 21:00 and every 30 minutes between 05:00 till 06:00 and from 21:00 until the midnight.

One way trip to the airport will cost EUR13 and the return trip – EUR 23.

The speed of this service against the competition and the potential for focus on the product and service for the airport market by the concession company, gives RhônExpress every opportunity to become the most successful tram to an airport yet.

Rhônexpress will offer airport traveller tailored service, including information screens announcing flight arrivals and departures, electrical outlets, space for luggage and a conductor on every train to handle passenger queries and sell tickets.
