In a joint statement, the mayors of Baie d'Urfé, Beaconsfield, Dollard des Ormeaux, Dorval, Kirkland, Pointe Claire, Ste. Anne de Bellevue and Senneville said the creation of an airport rail link "must form part of a plan to improve public transit and rail service to the western end of the island of Montreal and be integrated into Montreal's public transit network."

Aéroports de Montréal is proposing a $600-million plan that would create direct, non-stop rapid rail link between the airport and downtown. That plan has the support of the city of Montreal, the Société de transport de Montréal and the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal.

But the West Island mayors said "public investment should first support public transit and improved rail services to the west, not support an exclusive shuttle to the airport.

"The fact that this shuttle would not be integrated into Montreal's public transit network, or have convenient transfer points with the métro does not represent an efficient public transit alternative," the mayors said.

"In no way does the Aéroports plan meet the vision of Montreal's Plan de transport to reduce the dependence on the automobile."
