Airport station excavated for Ring Rail Line

The excavated area is 300 metres long, 27 metres wide and 15 metres high. The contractor at the airport site is Skanska Infra Oy will continue the work with the excavation of a double tunnel in both directions.

Tunnel excavation has been divided into five contracts. In addition to Skanska, work will be carried out by YIT Rakennus Oy Infra at Aviapolis and SRV Toimitilat Oy in Ruskeasanta.

The eastern mouth of the tunnel will be constructed by Lemminkäinen Infra Oy and the western mouth and Viinikkala tunnel section by Työyhteenliittymä Kehärata consortium.

The total price of the tunnel and mouth contracts is about 116 million euros.

The 18-kilometre Ring Rail Line will provide cross-town rail service as well as a link to Helsinki-Vantaa Airport via 8 kilometer tunnel under the airport.

Ring Rail Line - Route Map During peak periods trains will run at 10-minute intervals in both directions with a journey time to the airport of 30 minutes.

Construction of the Ring Rail Line began last May and work is proceeding according to plan and on schedule, official report says.

The Ring Rail Line project is being conducted under the direction of the Finnish Transport Agency's Rail Department. Cooperation partners are the City of Vantaa, the Finnish Transport Agency's Road Department and Finavia.
The cost of the Ring Rail Line is EUR 605 million. This will be divided as follows: Finnish Transport Agency will pay EUR 389 million, City of Vantaa – EUR 186 million and Finavia – EUR 30 million. The project will receive EUR 17.6 million of TEN-T support from the EU.

The line will go into operation in June 2014.
