At the moment the only option to travel by train from Stockholm to the airport is to take the dedicated service Arlanda Express.

The commuter train service is between Upplands Väsby and Uppsala via Stockholm-Arlanda, with an onward connection to Tierp and Gävle, known as “Upptåget”. Passengers travelling to Stockholm can change at Upplands-Väsby.

This governments decision means that the Stockholm’s transit agency SL will be able to extend the Märsta-Älvsjö branch of its commuter rail line north through Arlanda all the way to Uppsala via the municipality of Knivsta. (Article continues below)

The Chairman of SL Christer G Wennerholm said that the new line will help to increase the commuter traffic by 30%.

According to a proposal approved by the board of SL, the Arlanda-bound commuter trains would be operational by summer 2012.
