High quality service planned for the Costa del Sol

This is a part of a programme being undertaken by the Ministry of Development to transform the local line Malaga-Fuengirola in a modern style that allows users to offer a competitive and high quality service.

The contract includes electrification of the track and modernisation of the infrastructure along the Los Prados – Airport stretch, building of the new Airport train station, installation of the double track along the route and building of a new tunnel that will allow diverting the existing surface route underground.

It also includes dismantling of the current railroad, the demolition of the bridge over the Guadalhorce River and the structures at Cesar Vallejo Street and Azucarera-Intelhorce road also the demolition of the overpass to the existing Airport railway station, which is out of service.

Malaga-Fuengirola line
  • Until 2005 the Malaga-Fuengirola line was only a single track, limiting its capacity.
  • In 2007 the Ministry of Development and AENA signed an agreement to modernize the line.
  • The modernisation of Los Prados – Airport stretch (4.1 km) is part of the airport expansion and will include new train station integrated in the airport terminal.
  • The route will be equipped with double track electrified infrastructure.
