Dubai Metro hand luggage rule may be reviewed

According to Emirates Business, current rules allow commuters to carry only hand luggage, which has left many wondering why stations were built at Dubai International Airport if authorities were aware they would not permit luggage on the train.

A station at Terminal 1 has yet to open, although Terminal 3 station, which exclusively services Emirates airline flights, is in operation.

Passengers were left bewildered when told they could not take their bags on board.

Peyman Parham, Director of Marketing and Corporate Communication, RTA, said: "If just a few people come and ask us for more baggage allowance, we will not consider it. But if tens of thousands said they would use the Metro if they are allowed to carry heavy luggage we would consider it."

Consumer electronics distributor Jai Vase said: "I thought this would be like any other metro in Europe or America where you can save a lot of money getting to airports via their metros.

"I don't see the point of having a Metro station at the airport if travellers can't use it," he said.

Ramadan Abdulla Mohammed, Director of Rail Operations Department of RTA, said they were following the standards of Hong Kong and Singapore which only allow handbags.

"These cities have airport express trains which are dedicated to travellers. As a result, their metros only allow hand baggage," he said. "In our metro we have followed that standard."
