The Gautrain Rapid Rail Link comprises of two links, namely a link between Tshwane (Pretoria) and Johannesburg and a dedicated air-rail service between OR Tambo International Airport and Sandton.

According to project managers, airport passengers will be able to check-in their luggage at Sandton station. The trip between the airport and Sandton station will take less than 15 minutes.

The air-rail train will have two dedicated coaches for airport passengers with extra space for the luggage and six general passenger coaches. General commuter coaches on the airport link will not be accessible for airport passengers. Therefore, daily commuters using the general passenger services will only be able to embark or disembark at Rhodesfield, Marlboro and Sandton stations. The doors in the special airport cars will remain closed at intermediate stations such as Rhodesfield and Marlboro.
