Enhanced Rail Service to D.C., New York, Boston
The new service will include a direct connection from Lynchburg to Washington, D.C. through Charlottesville. The route will then head to New York and Boston.

The train would stop at Baltimore/Washington International Airport and essentially serve the same areas the Amtrak Crescent does now.

Kevin Page, director of the state Department of Rail and Public Transportation, said the deal would be historic. Virginia has never before subsidized intercity passenger service. Nearly a third of the money would be spent to rehabilitate cars and locomotives for the new service. The rest would go for operations. The new service is expected to begin in October. The Lynchburg-to-Washington service is part of the Trans-Dominion rail project. The long-term objective of that project is to link Abingdon with Richmond and Washington. |
