The new Ring Rail Line will become operational in 2014 and provide a rail link to the airport with a 30 minutes journey time to the city centre.
The 18 kilometres long Ring Rail Line will run from the Vantaankoski line via the airport to the main line in Hiekkaharju. The line will provide a rail link to Helsinki-Vantaa Airport as well as an important urban line that will bring high-standard public transport connections to an area with 200,000 inhabitants and 200,000 jobs.
In the first stage four new stations will be built on the line: Kivistö, Aviapolis, Airport and Leinelä. Four additional stations will be built later on: Vehkala, Petas, Viinikkala and Ruskeasanta.
The Ring Rail Line will include 7 kilometres tunnel, passing under the airport. Tunnel excavation will begin in April.
New low-floor commuter trains will operate on the Ring Rail Line. Trains will run at 10-minute intervals in both directions and will stop at all stations. The fastest journey from Helsinki to the airport will be about 30 minutes.
Passengers coming on long-distance trains from the north will be able to change trains in Tikkurila. The trip from Tikkurila to the airport will take about eight minutes.
The total cost estimate for the Ring Rail Line project is 590 million euros. Financing will be divided between the Finnish state (404 million euro) and the City of Vantaa (186 million euros). The project will also receive aid from the EU totalling 17.76 million euros.
The Finnish Rail Administration is in charge of the project. Other cooperation partners are the City of Vantaa, the Finnish Road Administration and Finavia.

| "The laying of the cornerstone is the symbolic start of the line's construction. Preparatory work such as field surveys and ground studies began last September and will be completed this spring. Tunnel planning has proceeded since last August, and planning of the surface sections of the line will begin in the spring. The excavation of maintenance tunnels will start at the end of April," said Maija Salonen, Project Manager of the Finnish Rail Administration. | ![]() |
