The measures were outlined in the new airport surface access strategy (ASAS) which sets out a series of targets and actions to be delivered by 2013, the date that the Glasgow Airport rail-link becomes operational.

The plan, which has been prepared in conjunction with Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT), transport providers, local authorities and others, aims to achieve an increase in the number of people travelling to and from the airport by public transport, from 11% today to 15% by 2012. On current passenger numbers, that would deliver an increase from 880,000 to 1.2 million.

To achieve the target, the surface access strategy includes a commitment to work with SPT and local bus companies to deliver new bus routes into the airport, and explore opportunities for bus and taxi lanes within the local road network.

The five year plan also aims to cut the number of passengers being dropped off and picked up, so called 'kiss and fly', which is considered to be the most environmentally damaging form of accessing the airport because it involves four car journeys.
