“The financial offers of four consortia for the Makkah-Madinah Railway Link (MMRL) project will be opened this month,” said Transport Minister Jabara Al Seraisry.

The project will be executed in phases. Part 1 of phase 1 includes the civil works of a 440 km railway extending from Makkah to Madinah, passing through King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah. The first line will run from Jeddah to Mekkah and the second will run from Jeddah to Madinah. Part 2 of phase 1 includes the construction of 6 train stations (located in Jeddah Islamic Port, King Abdulaziz International Airport, and King Abdullah Economic City). Phase 2 comprises the railway tracks, signaling and communication systems, and operations and maintenance.

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz ordered the implementation of the project last February and instructed officials to use Saudi local funds for the purpose.

The MMRL project, which is designed to operate trains with a speed of over 300 km per hour, would reduce travel time between Jeddah and Makkah to 30 minutes and between Jeddah and Madinah to two hours. The MMRL includes the construction of 450 km of high-speed electrified railway lines between Jeddah and Makkah and between Jeddah and Madinah. The railway will be equipped with advanced signaling and telecommunications systems.
