The journey from the airport to the central station (Hauptbahnhof) in the city centre, where there are also connections to long-distance routes, takes 25 minutes.

The first S-Bahn leaves Hamburg central station for the airport at 4:04 h. The first train in the opposite direction departs at 4:34 h. The last train departs from S-Bahn station Hamburg Airport (Flughafen) at 0:14 h. The trains run at 10-minute intervals between 6:00 and 23:00 h, every 20 minutes before and after these times.

The operators hope to receive about 13 thousand passengers per day.

This became possible when the new section, a 2.5 kilometer underground tunnel, of S-Bahn line from Ohlsdorf to the Airport was completed. Therefore passengers travelling from the city centre have to pay attention at Ohlsdorf, the last stop before the airport, as S 1 trains split up here. the first three cars (in the direction of travel) run to the airport, the last three cars - to Poppenbüttel.
