All aboard for an Avalon rail link

G21, a lobby group for local municipal councils, says a connection from the Geelong-Melbourne line to the growing airport could help in Avalon's bid for international status.

G21 head Andrew Scott has requested cash for the project from the Commonwealth's whopping $20 billion nation-building fund.

“What we are saying is that while you are fixing rail lines why not spend an extra few million to unlock the strategic value of Avalon airport?”, Scott said.

Lobby group Committee for Geelong also backed the plan, with the group's executive director, Peter Dorling, saying the airport had to keep growing.

“A rail link would give Avalon one hell of a competitive edge but we need to keep growing in all sectors, including retail, hotel and industrial”, Dorling said.
